Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive

Recently I began looking around for a new external hard drive because my current drive is heading toward a slow and painful demise. I had a $100 Apple Gift Card from Amanda’s parents (they are awesome), so I decided the Apple Store would be the first place to look.

I was originally planning on purchasing a LaCie drive, however the store did not have any. So I followed my gut and picked up the 500GB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition. What really caught my eye was the FireWire800 compatibility. Having such a speedy connection would allow me to edit video on-the-fly with this drive. Western Digital is also a great name so I was not phased one bit on spending $150 on an external drive.

A very cool feature that I noticed immediately was the LED status light on the front of the drive. This light will actually light up based on how much of the drives capacity has been used. There is also an abundance of software preloaded on the drive which adds to the value. Western Digital backup anywhere, and turbo drivers all come preloaded.

It has now been a week with my new Western Digital drive and I am very happy with my purchase. Overall the drive runs extremely fast when compared to my previous one. It seems to stay cooler than most other drives I have used. My one complaint is about the noise level. When I first set the drive up I did not notice any noise. However, I put together a new desk two days ago and for some reason the drive seems to run somewhat loud on this desk. I am going to try putting down some type of padding to dampen the vibration noise.
